Cost of Water in Cape Town, July 2013 Water Tariffs

Do you know what you will be paying for water after the City of Cape Town service tariff increases from 1 July 2013 to 2014?

Have a look at the water tariffs proposed in Cape Town draft budget 2013 /14 for residential, community and commercial properties set out below.  Understanding the tables and how your water use fits in is a good way of setting targets to reduce consumption to keep to as low a tariff level as possible.  Smaller households should aim to use less than 6000lts of water per month which is within the City’s free Basic Water Allowance.

Note that the tariff to dispose of sewage (sanitation) is directly linked to the amount of water a property uses.  So high water users are charged a correspondingly high sanitation fee.  Saving water and efficient use of water resulting in lower consumption results in a `double payback’ as both water and sanitation charges will be lower.

Water Reduction Tariffs for drought conditions, etc…

Note that the budget proposals for 2013 /14 includes the facility for the City of Cape Town to impose an additional fee in the instance of demand (water availability) not meeting supply as a result of drought or unexpectedly high consumption by water users.  In these situations the City proposes to levy an additional 10%, 20% or 30% depending on the severity of the mismatch between water supply and demand.   The implementation of such will be made known before the time and will normally be associated  with additional water restrictions to encourage users to save water and reduce demand.  The higher tariff goes hand in hand with lower volumes.  This is necessary to ensure that the cost to deliver the service is still recovered.
